Why shoe sizes differ by country#

Each system measures something slightly different. UK and US sizes are based on the length of the shoe last in barleycorns, a third of an inch per size, but start counting from different points, so US numbers run higher. EU sizes use the Paris point of two thirds of a centimeter and are unisex. Japan and China-CM sizes are simply foot length in centimeters. Because the base units differ, conversions are not a flat offset across the whole range.

The rough offsets#

For men, a UK size is about half a size below the US size: a US men's 10 is a UK 9.5. For women, the gap is about two sizes: a US women's 8.5 is a UK 6.5.
