Shoe size conversion at a glance#
Shoe size conversion matches your size in one country's system to the equivalent in another, across US, UK, EU, China, Japan, Australia and foot length in centimeters. As a rule of thumb, a UK size runs about half a size below US men's and about two sizes below US women's, while EU and China sizes are unisex and Japan and cm sizes equal foot length.
For example, a US men's 9 is a UK 8.5, an EU 42.5, a US women's 10.5, and about 26.7 cm of foot length. A China 42 converts to a US men's 8.5 or a US women's 10.

How do you convert a US shoe size to UK?#
Subtract about one size for US men's and about two sizes for US women's. From the chart above, a US men's 9 is a UK 8.5, and a US men's 10 is a UK 9.5. Sizes are not a perfectly even offset across the range, so check the row for your exact size.
How do you convert an EU shoe size to US?#
EU sizes are unisex, so the same EU number maps to a higher US women's number than US men's. An EU 42 is about a US men's 8.5 or a US women's 10, and an EU 44 is about a US men's 10 or a US women's 11.5.
What is a Chinese (CN) size 42 in US?#
A China 42 is about a US men's 8.5 or a US women's 10, the same foot length as an EU 42 and roughly 26 cm. Chinese brands can run small, so sizing up half a size is common.
Pick your gender and starting system, enter your size in the calculator above, and you will see the exact US, UK, EU, China, Japan and cm equivalents. Conversions vary by brand and last shape, so treat these as a starting point and measure your foot length in centimeters for the most reliable result. Why shoe sizes differ by country#
Each system measures something slightly different. UK and US sizes are based on the length of the shoe last in barleycorns, a third of an inch per size, but start counting from different points, so US numbers run higher. EU sizes use the Paris point of two thirds of a centimeter and are unisex. Japan and China-CM sizes are simply foot length in centimeters. Because the base units differ, conversions are not a flat offset across the whole range.
The rough offsets#
For men, a UK size is about half a size below the US size: a US men's 10 is a UK 9.5. For women, the gap is about two sizes: a US women's 8.5 is a UK 6.5. A US men's size is about 1.5 below the US women's size for the same foot, so a US men's 9 lines up with a US women's 10.5. EU sizes run roughly 33 to 34 above the US men's number in the mid range, but the step is uneven, so use the chart above rather than adding a fixed number.
Measure your feet first#
The most reliable input is foot length in centimeters, which maps directly to Japan and cm sizes. Stand on a sheet of paper, mark your heel and longest toe, and measure the distance. Measure both feet in the afternoon when they are largest, and size to the longer foot. A US men's 9 is about 26.7 cm and a US men's 10 about 27.3 cm, so a few millimeters can move you a half size.
Half sizes and widths#
A half size adds about a sixth of an inch of length and is worth trying when a whole size is tight and the next is loose. Width is separate from length: N is narrow, M is medium or standard, W is wide and WW is extra wide. A wide foot in a too-narrow shoe causes the same problems as a short one, so width matters as much as the number. For detail on width, see the shoe width chart for men and women.
Buying shoes abroad#
Asian-made shoes often run narrow and slightly small, so sizing up half a size is common. EU sizing is fairly consistent, though fashion brands can run small. Always check the brand size chart against your foot length in centimeters rather than trusting the label alone, and confirm the return policy before ordering across systems.
Frequently asked questions#
What is an EU size 38 in US women's shoes?#
An EU 38 is about a US women's 7 to 7.5, a little below the EU 39 that maps to a US women's 7.5 in the chart above. Brands vary, so check against your foot length, roughly 24 cm for an EU 38.
How do I convert an EU shoe size to US?#
Read across the chart from the EU column. An EU 42.5 is a US men's 9 or a US women's 10.5, and an EU 44 is a US men's 10 or a US women's 11.5. EU sizes are unisex, so the same number gives a higher US women's figure than US men's.
What is the difference between UK and US shoe sizes?#
UK sizes run lower than US sizes: about half a size for men and two sizes for women. A US men's 9 is a UK 8.5, and a US men's 10 is a UK 9.5. The offset is not perfectly even, so check the row for your exact size.
How does foot length in centimeters relate to shoe size?#
Centimeter and Japan sizes are your foot length directly. A 26.7 cm foot is a US men's 9 or EU 42.5; a 27.3 cm foot is a US men's 10 or EU 44. Measuring in centimeters is the most reliable way to convert because it skips the label entirely.
