How do I convert inches to shoe sizes?

Shoe sizes step by a fixed length. One US or UK size is one third of an inch (about 8.5 mm), so half a size is about 4 mm. One EU size is two thirds of a centimeter (about 6.7 mm). Measure your foot in inches, then find that length in the standard size table above, or enter it in the converter's By foot length mode.

Can I convert women's shoe sizes to men's and vice versa?

Yes. There's typically a 1.5-size difference between men's and women's shoes in US sizing, so a women's 8.5 is roughly a men's 7. This helps when shopping unisex styles. Why are European shoe sizes different from UK sizes?

European and UK sizes use different measurement systems. European sizes use a metric system based on the length of the foot in centimeters (Paris points). UK sizes are based on the length of the last used to make the shoe, measured in barleycorns (one-third of an inch). Understanding this matters when converting from a European shoe size to a UK shoe size.

How important are foot length and foot width for the right size?

Both are crucial. Shoes that are too narrow or too wide are uncomfortable even when the length is right. Measure your foot length from heel to longest toe and your width at the broadest part.
