Dress size conversion at a glance#

Dress size conversion lines up the US, UK and EU numbers for the same body, since each region labels the same dress differently. On this chart a US size sits 4 below the UK size and 32 below the EU size, so a US 8 is a UK 12 and an EU 40.

A European size 40 is a US 8, a UK 12 and a medium, fitting a 90–93 cm bust (35"–36.5") and a 73–77 cm waist (28"–30"). A European 38 is a US 6, a UK 10 and a small. To convert, subtract 32 from a European dress size for the US size (EU 40 − 32 = US 8) and add 4 to a US size for the UK size (US 8 + 4 = UK 12). A medium covers US 8–10 (UK 12–14, EU 40–42), small covers US 4–6 and large covers US 12–14.

These conversions are compiled from the full US, UK and EU dress chart below, with bust, waist and hip measurements in inches and centimeters for sizes 00 to 22. Brands cut letter sizes differently, so when you are between sizes go by the bust, waist and hip numbers rather than the letter. The same conversions apply to most women's clothing through the women's international size conversion chart, and the pants size chart covers bottoms, which run on a different scale.

US dress sizes explained#

US dresses use even-numbered misses sizes from 00 to 22, set by bust, waist and hip measurements rather than a single number. On this chart, 00 is an XXS, 0 and 2 are XS, 4 and 6 are small, 8 and 10 are medium, 12 and 14 are large, 16 and 18 are XL, and 20 and 22 are XXL. A US 8, the middle of the range, fits a 90-93 cm bust (35"-36.5"), a 73-77 cm waist (28"-30") and 98-101 cm hips (38"-40").

Brands deviate from these standards, so treat the chart as a starting point and check the brand's own size chart when one is available.

Why a European size is about 32 higher than a US size#

The gap is not random. European sizes are built from body measurements in centimeters under the EN 13402 standard, so the number tracks the body. US misses numbers (00, 0, 2 and up) are older catalog labels with no direct link to a measurement, which is why the two scales sit about 32 apart. US sizes have also drifted over time: the US commercial sizing standard was withdrawn in 1983, and brands have relabeled the same body with smaller numbers since, so a US 8 today is roomier than a US 8 from decades ago. That is why the same person can be two different US sizes in two brands but a steadier EU number, and why the safest move is to match your bust, waist and hip in centimeters to the chart rather than trust the label. If you sell dresses, listing the measurements in centimeters converts better than the size tag alone, because buyers in every region can check the same numbers.

International dress size conversion FAQs#

How do I accurately measure my dress size for international shopping?#

Accurately measuring your dress size involves taking three key measurements: bust, waist, and hips. Use a flexible measuring tape and measure the fullest part of your bust, the narrowest part of your waist (usually around your belly button), and the widest part of your hips. Ensure the tape measure is snug but not too tight. Refer to our detailed "How to Measure Your Dress Size" guide for step-by-step instructions and visuals to assist you.

What does a size 8 dress measurement entail, and how does it compare internationally?#

A size 8 dress in the US typically corresponds to a UK size 12, a European size 40, and varies in other countries. For a size 8, you would expect the measurements to approximately match those of the 'M' category in our international dress size chart, with a bust of 90-93 cm (35"-36.5"), a waist of 73-77 cm (28"-30"), and hips of 98-101 cm (38"-40"). However, sizes can vary significantly between brands, so it's essential to check the specific brand's size chart.

What are size 6 dress measurements?#

A US size 6 dress fits a bust of 86-89 cm (33.5"-35"), a waist of 69-72 cm (26.5"-28") and hips of 95-97 cm (37"-38"). It converts to a UK 10 and a European 38, a small on the international scale.

How do I convert my dress size from inches to cm for international sizes?#

To convert your dress size from inches to centimeters, you can use a simple conversion factor: 1 inch = 2.54 cm. For example, if your waist measurement is 28 inches, it converts to 71.12 cm (28 x 2.54 = 71.12). This method helps you to accurately find your size in international size charts, which often use centimeters for precision.

Can I use the international dress size chart for all types of dresses?#

The international dress size chart provides a general guideline for converting sizes across different countries and can be used for most types of dresses. However, keep in mind that dress styles (e.g., A-line, sheath, empire) and materials (e.g., stretchy fabric versus non-stretch) can affect the fit. Always consider the dress's specific design and fabric when selecting your size and consult the brand's size chart for the most accurate fit.

How can I find out what my dress size is in European or UK sizes if I usually shop in US sizes?#

To find out your European or UK dress size based on your US size, reference the international dress size chart provided. Locate your US size and follow the row across to see the corresponding sizes in the UK and Europe. For instance, a US size 6 generally converts to a UK size 10 and a European size 38. Be aware of variations in sizing standards and check with individual brands for the most accurate conversion.

How do I convert a US dress size to a UK dress size?#

Add 4 to the US size: a US 8 is a UK 12, a US 10 is a UK 14 and a US 12 is a UK 16. Going the other way, subtract 4 from the UK size to get the US size. The same UK numbers are used in Australia and New Zealand.

What is the average dress size in Europe?#

There is no single official average. European brands typically cut dresses from EU 30 to EU 54, and the middle of that range, EU 38 to 42 (US 6 to 10, UK 10 to 14), is where most brands stock the deepest. Size distributions differ by country, so go by your measurements rather than an average.

What should I do if my measurements fall between two sizes on the international dress size chart?#

If your measurements fall between two sizes on the chart, consider the dress's style and fabric. For more form-fitting styles or less stretchy materials, you might want to size up for comfort. Conversely, for looser fits or stretchy fabrics, sizing down could provide a better fit. Additionally, many brands offer specific fit guides or the option to customize sizes for an optimal fit.

Do dress sizes match pants and jeans sizes?#

US dress sizes use the same 00 to 22 misses numbering as women's pants, but fit depends on different measurements: dresses hinge on bust, while pants hinge on waist and hips. Check the pants size chart and the women's jeans size chart before assuming your dress size carries over.

How reliable are international dress size conversions for online shopping?#

While international dress size conversions provide a helpful starting point, they may not always guarantee a perfect fit due to differences in sizing standards and brand-specific variations. When shopping online, closely review the brand's size chart, read customer reviews for sizing tips, and consider the return policy in case the fit isn't right. Some online retailers also offer virtual fitting tools for a more accurate size prediction.

Are there any tips for choosing the right dress size when shopping in a different sizing system?#

Yes, when shopping in a different sizing system, consider these tips:

  • Always start with your precise measurements in inches or cm.
  • Compare your measurements with the brand's specific size chart.
  • Look for information on the fit (e.g., "runs small" or "true to size") in product descriptions or customer reviews.
  • Consider the dress's fabric and style, as they can influence the best size for you.
  • When in doubt, contact the brand's customer service for advice on sizing.
