How much does eBay take?

On a typical US sale, eBay takes about 13.6% of the total, plus a $0.30 to $0.40 per-order fee. So on a $50 item with free shipping, eBay's cut is about $7.20. On a $100 item it is about $14. There is no separate PayPal or card fee on top, because eBay handles payments itself.

The rate moves with the category. Books, movies and music run higher at 15.3%, authenticated sneakers over $150 drop to 8%, guitars are 6.7%, and a few categories like jewelry and watches start at 15%. The final value fee always applies to the full amount the buyer pays, including the shipping you charge and any sales tax eBay collects, so your real cut sits a point or two above the headline rate.

How eBay seller fees work

Under managed payments, eBay rolls almost everything into one bill. Here is every fee that can come out of a sale, so the number above is the number you actually keep.

Final value fee (the big one)

A percentage of the total amount the buyer pays: item price, shipping, and any sales tax. For most categories it is 13.6% on the portion up to $7,500 and 2.35% above that. It varies by category: 15.3% for books and media, 8% for authenticated sneakers over $150, 6.7% for guitars, and 15% tiers for jewelry and watches.

Per-order fee

A flat $0.30 if the order total is $10 or less, or $0.40 if it is over $10. Charged once per order, not per item. Authenticated sneakers $150 and up skip this fee.

Insertion and listing fees

Listing is free for your first 250 items each month. After that, most categories cost a $0.35 insertion fee per listing, and you pay it whether or not the item sells. The final value fee, by contrast, is only ever charged when an item sells.

Payment processing

There is no separate PayPal or card-processing fee. Under managed payments it is already baked into the final value fee, so you do not add 2.9% on top.

International fee

An extra 1.65% when the buyer or the delivery address is outside the US. It is waived if you ship through eBay International Shipping.

Promoted Listings (optional)

If you promote a listing you set an ad rate, usually 2% to 20%, and you only pay it when a sale is attributed to the ad within 30 days of a click. Off by default.

Store subscription (optional)

A monthly plan that lowers the final value fee by roughly 0.9 points and gives you more free listings. It pays for itself once you sell enough volume to cover the subscription. See the store break-even below.

Below Standard surcharge

If your account is rated Below Standard, eBay adds 6% to the variable final value fee. From July 1, 2026, that rises to 7% for accounts that stay Below Standard for four or more months in a row. Top Rated sellers get the opposite: 10% off the variable fee.

Sales tax

eBay collects and remits sales tax automatically, so it is never your income. But the final value fee is charged on it, which is why your effective rate is a little higher than the headline percentage. This calculator handles it correctly.

Real eBay sale examples

$30 t-shirt, free shipping

Final value fee 13.6% of $30 = $4.08, plus a $0.40 order fee = $4.48 in eBay fees. If the shirt cost you $8, you keep $17.52, a 58% margin.

$40 book or DVD lot

Media is 15.3%, the highest standard rate: 15.3% of $40 = $6.12, plus $0.40 = $6.52. If it cost you $10, you keep $23.48. Many calculators wrongly use 13.6% here.

$200 authenticated sneaker

Authenticated sneakers over $150 are 8% with no per-order fee: 8% of $200 = $16.00. No $0.40 fee. If they cost you $90, you keep $94.

$110 item ($100 + $10 ship)

The fee is charged on the full $110: 13.6% = $14.96, plus $0.40 = $15.36. People who forget the fee applies to shipping under-price by about $1.36 here.

Is an eBay store worth it?

Two things beyond the final value fee change your costs: how many items you list, and whether you pay for a Store. You get 250 free listings a month. After that it is a $0.35 insertion fee per listing in most categories. A Store raises that allowance, and from Basic up it trims the final value fee by about 0.9 points.

Prices are the monthly rate on an annual plan. A Starter Store does not lower the final value fee. A Basic Store at $21.95 a month does, so it pays for itself once you sell roughly $2,400 a month on the fee saving alone, before counting the extra free listings.

What counts as a good profit on eBay?

There is no official "good" margin, but the math is simple. After eBay's roughly 13.6% and your own costs, what is left is your real profit. The calculator gives you three numbers to judge it. Net profit is the dollars in your pocket, margin is that profit as a share of the sale, and ROI measures it against what you spent to source and ship.

Fast-moving items can work on a thin margin because you turn them over quickly. Slow items need a fatter one to be worth the shelf space. Use the breakeven price as your floor, then price above it with the margin you want.

Do you still pay PayPal fees on eBay?

No. eBay moved to its own managed payments system in 2021, so eBay handles card processing and there is no separate PayPal fee on an eBay sale. That cost is already inside the final value fee. You only run into PayPal fees if you take a payment outside eBay, for example a direct invoice. There, PayPal's Goods and Services fee is 3.49% plus $0.49 per transaction in the US.
