Salary vs. wage#

A salary is a fixed amount, usually quoted per year and paid in equal installments, no matter how many hours you put in. A wage is paid by the hour, so the total depends on hours worked in each pay period. Under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt hourly workers earn overtime, typically 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a week. Many salaried roles are exempt and do not receive that extra pay.

Pay frequency and pay periods#

How often you are paid changes the size of each paycheck, not the annual total. Bi-weekly pay means 26 paychecks a year; semi-monthly means 24; monthly means 12; weekly means 52. To find the gross amount of one paycheck, divide your annual salary by the number of pay periods. A $52,000 salary is $2,000 per bi-weekly check or about $2,166.67 semi-monthly.

Gross pay vs. take-home pay#

The figures above are gross pay, before anything is withheld. Take-home pay is lower once federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and any state or local income tax come out. Pre-tax deductions like health insurance premiums and 401(k) contributions reduce your taxable income, which lowers the tax withheld. Your filing status and the number of jobs you hold also affect how much is held back.

Part-time and variable hours#

For part-time or seasonal work, use your actual weekly hours and the number of weeks you work rather than a full 40-hour, 52-week year. A 20-hour week at $20 an hour is $400 a week and $20,800 a year if you work all 52 weeks. Unpaid weeks lower the annual total, so subtract any time off without pay.

Multiply the hourly rate by your weekly hours, then by the number of weeks you work. At 40 hours over 52 weeks, $25 an hour is 25 x 40 x 52 = $52,000 a year.

How do I work out my gross pay per paycheck?#

Divide your annual salary by the number of pay periods. A $60,000 salary paid bi-weekly is 60,000 / 26 = about $2,307.69 per check before deductions.

Why is my take-home pay lower than my salary?#

Taxes and deductions come out of gross pay. Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, any state or local tax, and benefits like health insurance or a 401(k) all reduce what lands in your account.
