Hours and minutes at a glance#

An hours and minutes calculator adds or subtracts time values such as 2 hours 45 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes. It adds the hours together and the minutes together, then carries every 60 minutes over into 1 hour so the result stays in proper hours-and-minutes form.

For example, to add 2 hours 45 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes: add the hours, 2 + 1 = 3 hours; add the minutes, 45 + 30 = 75 minutes; then carry the extra 60 minutes, so 75 minutes is 1 hour 15 minutes. The total is 3 hours plus 1 hour 15 minutes, which is 4 hours 15 minutes.

Subtraction works the same way in reverse: if the minutes you are taking away are larger, borrow 1 hour as 60 minutes first, then subtract. To turn a time into total minutes, multiply the hours by 60 and add the minutes, so 3 hours 45 minutes is 180 + 45 = 225 minutes.

Adding hours and minutes#

Add the hours to the hours and the minutes to the minutes, then carry every 60 minutes over into 1 hour. To add 4 hours 56 minutes and 6 hours 48 minutes: 4 plus 6 is 10 hours; 56 plus 48 is 104 minutes; 104 minutes is 1 hour 44 minutes; the total is 11 hours 44 minutes.

Subtracting time and finding a duration#

To find how long something lasted, subtract the start time from the end time. From 9:15 AM to 2:45 PM, convert to 24 hour form (09:15 and 14:45) and subtract: 14:45 minus 09:15 is 5 hours 30 minutes. If the minutes you are taking away are larger than the minutes you have, borrow 1 hour as 60 minutes first, then subtract.

Converting between hours and minutes#

To turn a time into total minutes, multiply the hours by 60 and add the minutes. 3 hours 45 minutes is 3 times 60 plus 45, which is 225 minutes. To go back the other way, divide the minutes by 60: the whole number is the hours and the remainder is the leftover minutes, so 225 minutes is 3 hours 45 minutes again.
