How do you find the hours and minutes between two times?#

Why hours and minutes need carrying#

Unlike ordinary numbers that carry at 10, time carries at 60. An hour consists of 60 minutes, a minute is 60 seconds, and a day has 24 hours. When your sum of minutes reaches 60 or more, you convert every 60 into 1 hour, and the remainder stays in the minutes column.

This explains why using a calculator with a decimal point for time sums often goes wrong. For example, entering 2.45 + 1.30 gives 3.75, which misleadingly appears as 3 hours 75 minutes, an invalid time. The correct answer, 4 hours 15 minutes, emerges only when the 75 minutes are carried.

Here's a specific scenario: you start at 9:45 am with two consecutive tasks, one taking 2 hours 45 minutes and the other 1 hour 30 minutes.

Adding hours and minutes#

Align the two times in columns, with hours on the left and minutes on the right, then add each column.

Minutes: 45 + 30 equals 75 minutes. Hours: 2 + 1 equals 3 hours. Since 75 minutes make 1 hour and 15 minutes, move the 1 hour into the hours column, so 3 + 1 equals 4 hours, with 15 minutes remaining.

These two tasks take 4 hours 15 minutes. Starting at 9:45 am, you finish by 2:00 pm, because 9:45 plus 4 hours reaches 1:45 pm and an extra 15 minutes take you to 2:00 pm.

This carrying method applies to any number of times. Sum all the hours, sum all the minutes, and divide the minutes by 60: the quotient goes to the hours and the remainder stays as minutes.

Subtracting hours and minutes#

Subtracting works the other way. If the minutes to subtract exceed what you have, borrow 1 hour from the hours column, adding it as 60 minutes.

Take 4 hours 15 minutes and subtract a second task lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. Since 15 minus 30 doesn't work, borrow: 4 hours 15 minutes becomes 3 hours 75 minutes. The calculation 75 minus 30 leaves 45 minutes and 3 minus 1 leaves 2 hours. You ultimately have 2 hours 45 minutes, which should match the first task.

Determining the time between two clock times involves subtraction too, and that's what the calculator does. From 09:45 to 14:00 involves 14:00 minus 9:45. Borrow 1 hour to express 14:00 as 13 hours 60 minutes. The subtraction 60 minus 45 produces 15 minutes, and 13 minus 9 gives 4 hours.

Multiplying hours and minutes#

Repeating a specific time multiple times requires multiplying both the hours and minutes separately before carrying. For example, a shift lasting 7 hours 24 minutes, repeated five days a week, comes to 35 hours and 120 minutes. Because 120 minutes equal exactly 2 hours, the entire week equals 37 hours.

Converting between minutes and hours#

To convert hours and minutes into minutes, multiply the hours by 60 and add any remaining minutes. Therefore, 4 hours 15 minutes equals 4 × 60 + 15, totaling 255 minutes. Similarly, 3 hours 20 minutes equals 180 + 20, resulting in 200 minutes.

To convert minutes back into hours and minutes, divide by 60. The quotient indicates the hours, and the remainder indicates the minutes. For instance, 255 minutes gives 4 with a remainder of 15, which is 4 hours 15 minutes. For larger numbers, first divide by 1,440, representing the minutes in a day, to determine the number of days. 25,913 minutes converts to 17 days, 23 hours, and 53 minutes, or 431 hours 53 minutes.

Decimal hours follow a reverse process. Multiply the decimal part by 60 to derive the minutes: 4.25 hours convert to 4 hours and 0.25 × 60 equals 15 minutes. 39.88 hours becomes 39 hours and 52.8 minutes, approximately 39 hours 53 minutes.

Using the calculator#
