Fraction to decimal at a glance#
A fraction to decimal calculator divides the numerator by the denominator. The top number is the dividend and the bottom number is the divisor, so 3/4 is 3 divided by 4, which is 0.75. Every fraction either ends or repeats as a decimal.
| Fraction | Division | Decimal |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 | 1 / 2 | 0.5 |
| 1/4 | 1 / 4 | 0.25 |
| 3/4 | 3 / 4 | 0.75 |
| 1/8 | 1 / 8 | 0.125 |
| 1/3 | 1 / 3 | 0.333 |
| 2/3 | 2 / 3 | 0.667 |
To convert by hand, use long division: 1/8 is 1 divided by 8, which gives 0.125 exactly. When the division does not end, the decimal repeats, so 2/3 is 0.6666... and is usually rounded to 0.667. You can also scale the denominator to 10, 100 or 1000 when it divides evenly, since 3/4 becomes 75/100, or 0.75.
Enter your fraction in the calculator above for the exact decimal at the rounding you choose. Repeating decimals are cut off at that precision, so 2/3 reads as 0.667 rather than running on.
How to convert a fraction to a decimal#
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The top number is the dividend and the bottom is the divisor, so 5/8 is 5 divided by 8, which is 0.625. Every fraction either ends as a decimal or settles into a repeating pattern.
Terminating and repeating decimals#
A fraction terminates when its reduced denominator has only 2s and 5s as prime factors, like 7/8 = 0.875. Otherwise it repeats: 1/7 is 0.142857142857..., cycling the same six digits. The calculator rounds repeating results at the precision you choose, so 2/3 reads as 0.667.
Scaling to a power of 10#
When the denominator divides evenly into 10, 100 or 1000, you can skip long division. Multiply the top and bottom to reach that denominator: 3/5 times 2/2 is 6/10, or 0.6, and 7/8 times 125/125 is 875/1000, or 0.875.
Comparing fractions as decimals#
Decimals make fractions easy to rank. To compare 1/7 and 2/13, convert both: 1/7 is about 0.142857 and 2/13 is about 0.153846. Since 0.153846 is larger, 2/13 is the greater fraction.
Frequently asked questions#
What is 3/4 as a decimal?#
3/4 is 3 divided by 4, which is 0.75 exactly. The division ends because 4 has only 2s as prime factors.
How do I convert an improper fraction or mixed number?#
For an improper fraction, divide as usual: 22/7 is about 3.142857. For a mixed number, convert it to an improper fraction first, so 1 1/2 becomes 3/2, or 1.5.
Why do some fractions repeat as decimals?#
When the reduced denominator has a prime factor other than 2 or 5, the division never ends, so 1/3 repeats as 0.333... and 2/3 as 0.666...
How does rounding work?#
You set the number of decimal places, and the calculator cuts a repeating decimal there. So 2/3 returns 0.667 rather than running on.
Can I convert a fraction to a percent from here?#
Convert to a decimal, then multiply by 100. For 3/4, that is 0.75 times 100, or 75%.
